This Motherless Land by Nikki May
352 pages; Published by Doubleday on 18th July 2024; no measurements as an ARC
Definitely one of my top reads for 2024.
This is your summer read right here folks!
You do not need to be an Austen fan to enjoy this wonderful reimagining of Mansfield Park.
I have been so excited for this and was waiting for the right moment to read. I am a mood reader and now was the time. I did not want this to end. I felt that I did not want to read in one sitting, I wanted this to last. However, if given the opportunity I would that could so easily done so for sure. I preferred to treat myself to just a few chapters each night over a few nights.
I found so much of the outsider element to this resonated with me. There will always be an extra connection with a book that is set where you live and grew up around the same time.
I can completely understand the juxtaposition between the different continents from my own experiences, it is not just being in another country once you are in another continent- it can feel like being on another planet.
Nikki May’s descriptions and narrative are so compelling you can’t help but feel emotionally involved in this book. This book touches on so many subjects, of being an outsider; racism, gender roles, equality, greed, jealousy, betrayal and harsh realities.
My heart melted early when our protagonist’s English cousin makes so much effort to be welcoming, it was beautiful to see this relationship develop. The dramatic irony had me on the edge of my seat!
I can’t mention too much regarding sensory in this review as I was reading an ARC, however the hardback due out in just a couple of weeks, on 18th July, it looks to have the same cover design.
This cover grabs me with its bright colours and who couldn’t love Billy the African grey parrot which is just stunning. The cover and physical book gives me summer vibes.
I am very lucky to have been personally invited to Nikki’s launch party for This Motherless Land. I can’t wait! Thank You Nikki for this stunning book and for giving me the opportunity to read ahead of publication date and inviting us to your launch.
Folks I highly recommend you buy this book!
