My Good Friday Five (on Easter Saturday)
Five favourite things of the week that have provoked thought, inspiration and contemplation
Good Friday greetings to those that celebrate Easter. For my household we celebrated Ostara a few weeks before.
This week’s round-up, I bring to you the following;
Photo of my dearest Papa - author, photographer, writer, editor, and many more skills to list.
Peter Donald Nicholson 01/05/48 - 30/10/23
The start of this week we held our celebration of life for my wonderful father. The sun came out for us and it was a beautiful day down in Somerset where we celebrated at the Westonzoyland Pumping Station Museum Of Steam Power & Land Drainage.
Papa was taken for rides on his narrow gauge working engines. Friends, family and people who had known Papa for many decades joined together to enjoy a cream tea (Papa’s favourite West Country treat), stories, memories and anecdotes along with rides and a beautiful flypast provided by the Middlezoy Aerodrome. Topped off by a meal at a pub with the appropriate name of The Railway.
The Diary of Samuel Pepys (Selections) - Edited by N.V. Meeres (Exhibitioner of Magdalene College - 1935)
This week has seen the start of our student dive into the wonderful world of Pepys. I have been looking forward to this part of our course and immersing oneself in this incredible account of life from the most famous diarist of the 17th century.
Of course my Papa had this exceptional beauty of a copy handed down to him from what I believe was his uncle on his father’s side. There must have been other volumes perhaps they are around in my Papa’s immense library but this is the one he could lay his hands on back in September when I showed him my reading list for the first year of university.
Poor Papa was gravely ill at this point passing away in just a matter of weeks after. Sadly and regretfully I didn’t know we only had that short time left and I’m not sure Papa realised in September that the end is so near. I have of course inherited my Papa’s immense library that will join my own for which I am so grateful for.
Glorious Flowers
These were sent from my Papa’s cousin who couldn’t attend the celebration of life. I simply love flowers bouquets that are arranged like this, though of course, sad reason to have received. This week, they certainly did bring a smile to our faces, so if you are reading this Paul & Geraldine THANK YOU.
Growing up my Papa & grandfather taught me about flowers and both had stunning colourful gardens, I hope I will be able to find the time to plant and maintain a garden during my life and will always remember many of my family who appreciated gardens and natural beauty as I was very fortunate both sets of grandparents had bountiful gardens, as well as my parents.
Shaken Udder vanilla milkshake
Again this relates back to Papa and being taken for milkshakes in places such as Wimpy or Beefeater pubs as a little girl. Both Papa and I enjoy a milkshake.
Shaken Udder has been a firm favourite for a few years now as a treat now and again. These past few months I’ve been treating myself to one to help with the Monday blues.
The Greeks by H.D.F. Kitto (1958)
Again another example of the books Papa could just find when I showed him my reading list for the first year of study. The year kicked off with study of classical writings and this was something magical to be gifted. I will never part with these wonderful books Thank you Papa.
