Earth by John Boyne
Second book in his element series; 176 pages; Published by Doubleday 18/04/24; Dimensions: 14.2 x 1.8 x 22.3 cm
Earth is the second book in John Boyne’s element series. You could read this as a stand alone book but it is much better to have read Water first. I was so excited for this next instalment and the wait was certainly worth it and boy did this not disappoint.
I found it even more exciting than Water. I can’t wait for Fire, which is due out towards the end of the year. For Earth, just as with Water, Boyne has a super way of tackling sensitive, very topical subjects and really knows how to pack a punch.
Boyne presents the reader with the feeling of what if, and what would you do, if you were put in such positions as his characters. Boyne challenges the reader with dilemmas in our modern and corrupt world and the lives we lead.
This is what I always refer to as the rough with the smooth and at what cost, for the things in life we desire. I felt Earth had a magnificent twist at the end which I really hope we get to find out what happens next.
Sensory wise, I love the small sleek size and feel to this book. I myself like hardbacks when they are small and presented like this. The cover of the book has a smooth feel to it and would wipe over if you needed to.
The pages are soft and the text very central though slightly small compared to other books. If anyone knows any exact text sizes please let me know as I love to add it. I would be most grateful. Thank you in advance.
Under the cover is a bright white hardback with the author and the book title written clearly in black. I love the grass and sunset image on the front which is wrapped around to the back.
I love that on the inside is an image as if you the reader is lying on the grass looking up at the sky and it is the same for the inside back cover.
I also always love seeing a photo of the author along with some information about the person who has written the novel. Images of the author are always great for myself and my anxiety as when I go to an author event, I can easily recognise them.
